Broadcast Journalism
Hall of Fame

The students selected for induction into the Broadcast Journalism Hall of Fame are those students who go beyond what is expected and produce the best possible projects for our broadcast program. These students are professional on camera, and have the ability to research, write, and report on a variety of subjects. The students must also show a strong acumen for editing and be able to operate all of the equipment in our studio. Most importantly, these students are also class leaders who show a devotion both to the school and to their classmates as well. The videos selected represent some of the best work done by each student.

Demetrius joined our program during his sophomore year, and quickly established himself as one of the leading reporters and anchors in our program. He was selected as the first "Rookie of The Year" as a sophomore, and as Broadcast Journalist of The Year during his senior year. His documentary on the school's Interdisciplinary "murder" project not only earned a second place finish in a national competition, it also landed him a job as a photojournalist at KVBC, the local NBC affiliate.

Demetrius is attending Arizona State University where he is majoring in Broadcast Journalism. It is his goal to be the first of his classmates to return to the Canyon as a network reporter.

Demetrius also holds the distinction of creating the first music video at The Canyon. This video won local and national awards, and was performed live in Washington D.C.

Misael Parra, Jr.

Misael has the dubious distinction of having been Mr. Rizzo's student from sixth through twelfth grade. Because of this, he came to The Canyon with more experience than any other student, and this allowed him to begin producing videos before the school was even open. He was the first student chosen "Broadcast Journalist of the Year", and along with Trevor Royer and Anthony Reed, he created the format for "Inside Canyon Springs". Misael won numerous national and local awards for his work, including a commercial that received a perfect score of 100. Misael will also always be remembered as the anchor with an identical brother AND cousin.

Misael is majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Broadcast and Media Studies at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He hopes to become a network reporter specializing in criminal justice issues.

This video was the first video that was shown at our school, when we inaugurated our station in November of 2004.

Anthony was fortunate to have had the opportunity to begin his future career as a political reporter by interviewing a number of national political figures including, Barack Obama, Jessie Jackson, former President Jimmy Carter, and a number of other state, local and national politicians. He was the first person selected for the "Pioneer Talent Award", and was chosen "Broadcast Journalist of the Year" in his senior year.

Anthony is at Arizona State University, majoring in Broadcast Journalism. He's also assured Demetrius that he will be the first to return as a network reporter.

In this video Anthony reports on the Reverend Jesse Jackson's visit to our school.

Stephen Barris

Stephen was the quintessential behind-the-scenes worker during his sophomore and junior years, creating videos, and serving in most of the positions in the studio. It was during his senior year that he chose to move in front of the camera and become a reporter and anchor for our shows. He was selected by his peers for the "Pioneer Talent Award" during his senior year.

Stephen is at the College of Southern Nevada studying fire science and getting his medical degree as well. He works for the Bureau of Land Management as a wild land firefighter. His long term goal is to get hired on at a valley Fire Department, working search and rescue as a medic.

Stephen's D.U.I. video was downloaded from our site and used at schools in California and Nevada to discourage teen drinking.
